2 Dead at UC Irvine in Apparent Murder-Suicide

Two people were found dead Tuesday evening at The University of California, Irvine. The investigation is ongoing.

The approximate location that the individuals were found

It is confirmed that two people were found dead inside a building at UC Irvine on Tuesday afternoon. It is currently unknown if the individuals were students.

Chancellor Howard Gillman released a statement:

" It is with great sadness that I inform you of the death on campus of two individuals this afternoon. We are still gathering information about who the victims are and exactly what happened, but law enforcement has informed us that there is no ongoing danger to our community."

Gillman also states that it appears one of the deaths "occurred at the hands of another." It is unclear at this time if the other deceased individual was the one who caused the death.

At approximately 4:09 PM Tuesday, a campus-wide alert was issued to students: "Police and fire activity at Social Science Plaza B, please avoid the area until further notice."

A second alert was issued at 4:48: "Continued Police activity at Social Science Building B. Please avoid the area. No threat to the community."

As of this evening, there is still an ongoing police presence with tape surrounding multiple entrances to the building.

For members of the UCI community, it is a well-known fact that there have been numerous incidents on campus over the years involving the Social Science Towers, a high expanse of department offices that overlooks campus. Despite the incident, the apparent deaths come at a shocking time as the university begins its winter break.
